White’s Ford Flies to Dominant Victory in Thrilling Autosolo
Gary White produced a masterclass in precision driving to claim a commanding overall victory at the weekend’s Autosolo event, finishing a full 27 seconds ahead of his nearest rival after eight challenging tests.
White, at the wheel of his Ford, established his dominance from the outset, setting a blistering pace of 97 seconds on the first test – a full second ahead of Howard Price’s Subaru. The Ford driver never relinquished his lead throughout the day, extending his advantage with each subsequent test to finish with a total time of 1,754 seconds.
“The car felt absolutely spot on from the first run,” White told reporters. “Once I found my rhythm, I just focused on clean lines and maintaining consistency through each test.”
Gareth Price mounted a determined challenge in his BMW, climbing from an initial fifth place after test one to secure second overall with 1,781 seconds. Howard Price completed the podium places, guiding his Subaru to third with a time of 1,808 seconds after briefly holding second position during the early tests.
The battle for class honours proved equally compelling. In Class C, Chris Farrell’s Ford emerged victorious with 1,838 seconds, despite strong competition from Ken Worf’s BMW. Farrell established his class lead on the opening test and maintained his advantage throughout the day, though Worf kept him honest with consistent performances.
Class N witnessed perhaps the day’s most intriguing contest, with Cernyw Howatson’s Ford ultimately prevailing with 1,903 seconds. Howatson found himself embroiled in a three-way battle with James Hall’s MG and Gareth Lloyd’s Subaru, with the trio separated by just 36 seconds at the finish.
The event featured several notable performances, including Alun Evans, who demonstrated remarkable consistency in his Toyota to finish 23rd overall despite a challenging final test. Meanwhile, Chris Smith impressed in his Mazda, climbing steadily through the field to secure 29th position overall and eighth in Class C.
At the other end of the spectrum, Jack Williams endured a difficult day in his Ford, struggling particularly on test one where he recorded a time of 149 seconds – significantly adrift of the frontrunners. Similarly, Mark Stacey’s VW suffered throughout, eventually finishing 54th overall with a total time of 2,650 seconds.
The turning point for many competitors came during the fourth test, which featured a particularly challenging sequence of tight manoeuvres that caught out several drivers. Kevin Stones saw his hopes of a top-three finish fade after a disappointing run, while Rob Palmer’s MG suffered a significant setback that would ultimately relegate him to 50th position.
As temperatures rose throughout the day, the increasingly slippery surface added another dimension to the challenge, with the final test proving particularly treacherous for those running later in the order.
The event, held in glorious sunshine, attracted a strong entry of 57 competitors across three classes, with Ford proving the most popular marque with 14 representatives, followed by BMW with 10 and Mazda with five.
White’s victory continues his impressive form this season, with his Ford once again demonstrating its perfect suitability to the technical demands of Autosolo competition.
