Mosey Masters Albemarle Targa Rally with Commanding Performance

David Mosey produced a masterclass in precision driving to claim overall victory at the Albemarle Targa Rally, piloting his Vauxhall Corsa to the top step of the podium with a total time of 4507 seconds across the event’s 12 challenging tests.

The battle for supremacy was fiercely contested throughout, with Andrew Roughead’s Mini Cooper finishing just 19 seconds behind in second place, while Bradley White rounded out the podium positions in his Ford Fiesta a further six seconds adrift.

Mosey established his credentials early, setting competitive times from the outset. However, the opening test saw Ali Procter’s Toyota MR2 and Simon Jennings’ Peugeot 106 both outpace him. Undeterred, Mosey demonstrated remarkable consistency across subsequent tests, gradually building his advantage as the rally progressed.

By the halfway point, Mosey had established a slender lead over Roughead and White, with the trio separated by just three seconds. This three-way tussle for supremacy continued into the latter stages, but Mosey’s metronomic precision ultimately proved decisive as he extended his advantage through the final tests.

In Class MN, Roughead’s second-place overall finish secured him class honours, with Miles Fieldhouse’s Fiat Panda taking second in class and fifth overall with a time of 4649 seconds. The nimble Mini Cooper proved ideally suited to the technical nature of the tests, allowing Roughead to maintain impressive pace throughout.

The hotly contested ME class saw Mosey take top honours, with White’s Fiesta and Jennings’ Peugeot completing the class podium. Neil Raven put in a commendable performance in his Mazda MX-5 to secure fourth in class and sixth overall.

Luke Tait emerged victorious in Class HE, his Ford Escort proving more than a match for Ian Curwen’s classic Austin Mini. Tait’s final time of 4989 seconds placed him 14th in the overall standings, nearly 1000 seconds ahead of Curwen.

The middle section of the rally proved particularly challenging for many competitors, with several drivers incurring significant time penalties. The technical complexity of tests seven through nine saw the field spread out considerably, creating decisive gaps in the standings.

Mazda MX-5s featured prominently throughout the field, with no fewer than seven examples competing across various classes. Philip Hodgson and David Leach both piloted their MX-5s to top-ten finishes, demonstrating the enduring appeal and effectiveness of Mazda’s iconic roadster in targa rally competition.

The BMW contingent also showed strong form, with Mark Slatcher and Liam Charlton sharing a 318ti to secure ninth and tenth positions respectively, showcasing the German marque’s handling prowess across the varied tests.
